But I could also think of bands who challenged and baffled me with new releases, maybe not stacking up to my all-time favorites by them, but at least showing some artistic growth as they shrugged off unrealistic fan expectations that probably couldn’t be met long after the band’s chosen genre was past its heyday. I mean, I could think of bands whose music I’ve fawned over in the past and who I ended up stone cold turning against to the point where I don’t even bother listening to their new stuff any more, and Incubus isn’t quite at that point yet. Of all the bands whose music I’ve had erratic, love/hate relationships with over the years, Incubus is… definitely one of ’em.
There are a few bits of experimentation here and there, but don’t hold your breath for anything fascinating in the exploratory department. In Brief: Incubus returns to making actual rock music, which would have been a nice change following the lifeless If Not Now, When?, but subpar songwriting and bone-headed repetition kill off most of the creative spark this band once displayed.
